Ahead of a sold-out-in-minutes performance at Dark Mofo festival tonight, proud Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali sovereign woman & Naarm/Melbourne-via-lutruwita/Tasmania artist MISS KANINNA (she/her - pronunciation guide here), a history-making 6-time ARIA Award nominee, multi-award-winner, and leader whose cultural influence extends far beyond the stage announces her long-awaited debut mixtape BLACKPRINT (Fri 21 Aug). "We know we’re the key to start of civilisation, we're literally the blueprint and we don't care if white people agree or not, we aren't gonna wait for you" says Miss Kaninna of the mixtape and its title, announced alongside new single 'HANDOUT' ft. Jamahl Yami, continuing a deft old-school hip-hop sonic homage, this time centreing "black power and rage, especially with the double standards of crime and prosecution in so-called 'Australia'". Also announcing an 7-date so-called AU headline tour co-presented by triple jI OH YOU & MG Live around the continent across Jul-Sep in so-called NSW, VIC, QLD, NT & WA in support of the mixtape, Miss Kaninna is set to be "the first ever Aboriginal MC" to play Sziget Festival, with additional performances at Boomtown Festival UKKing St Crawl, Dark Mofo and standalone shows in so-called ACT and Kinjarling/Albany - all dates below. Set to also include recent single 'MOB TIES', BLACKPRINT is out Friday 21 Aug via Soul Has No Tempo / AWAL Recordings - pre-save/pre-order HERE; 'HANDOUT' is out now - stream/purchase HERE.

The BLACKPRINT mixtape tour goes on MG Live pre-sale on Mon 22 Jun; officially going on sale Tues 23 Jun - details below.

Atop an absolutely filthy beat, 'HANDOUT' ft. Jamahl Yami centres Black power while reclaiming identity and rage, calling out privilege and the double standards of crime and prosecution in so called-Australia. Sonically referencing old-school hip-hop like The Beat Junkies' JRocc - continuing an homage to the era that 'MOB TIES' also made - with layers of string plucks, trills and delayed BVs, Miss Kaninna's thinned-out vocals spit fire and fury with Waanyi/Gangaliida rapper Jamahl Yami's coolly-delivered bars providing a launchpad for her own irrepressible energy, as she takes full vocal control in the second verse. Self-produced at friendship studios on Wurundjeri Country with Nikodimos (Hiatus Kaiyote, Genesis Owusu) acting as executive producer, 'HANDOUT' flowed out naturally in two short sessions thanks to Miss Kaninna's organic approach to musicianship and a solid foundation of trust built between the three artists, and had its live debut at the recent De La Soul tour, who Miss Kaninna supported nationally, and referred to her as "the queen" at their Magan-djin show.

Miss Kaninna says of the track: "HANDOUT' looks at themes of privilege of white "Australia", it's about black power and reclaiming identity and rage, especially with the double standards of crime and prosecution in so-called “Australia”. I make music based off how the song is supposed to be and the song developed in an organic way, which - art based on a feeling and if it becomes a single, that’s a bonus. I’ve been wanting to make a track with my brother Jamahl (Yami) since I met him 3.5 years ago. Jamahl is like my older brother and would tag along to all the stuff he was going to when I first moved to Melbourne and we were jamming and making a lot of music together and we were finally presented with an opportunity to work together on my project - Jamahl’s voice and cadence leant itself to the first verse and the rest is history. I knew he belonged on this because of how much he’s supported me so far. Nikodimos is an incredible producer and musician, I had been working with him for a couple of weeks getting to know him, to see what kind of music he could make for me and my peoplehe was picking up all sorts of instruments throughout the sessions."

BLACKPRINT - due Fri 21 Aug - is the long-awaited incoming mixtape from a singular artist, creative force, compelling performer and leader whose cultural influence extends far beyond the stage, as Miss Kaninna continues to make history and level up with every move. A title that's always appealed to Miss Kaninna - "we know we’re the key to start of civilisation, we're literally the blueprint and we don't care if white people agree or not, we aren't gonna wait for you" she says - the 6-track BLACKPRINT mixtape consists mainly of freestyles that gradually transformed into songs in front of heaving stadium crowds: a supercharged vehicle to express joy, anger, freedom and frustration rooted firmly in hip-hop with influences across funk/soul/R&B, rock, punk, grunge, club and beyond featuring guest appearances from Kobie Dee and Jamahl Yami, all delivered with Miss Kaninna's world-class panache and urgent resonance. Produced by Miss Kaninna with additional production via Lucy Blomkamp (6lack, Mallratperfectworld) and executively produced by Nikodimos (Hiatus Kaiyote, Genesis Owusu) at friendship studios on Wurundjeri Country, it follows globally acclaimed and award-winning 2024 EP KANINNA, with BLACKPRINT's commanding lead single 'MOB TIES' attracting local & international attention to the project before its announcement.

With a singular reputation for her ability to create space to rouse rage and joy in equal measure - boasting over 3M+ streams across her catalogue and live shows seeing her praised as "electrifying" (Rolling Stone), "steal[ing] the show" (Double J), "furious fun" (The Guardian) plus peers like Amyl & the Sniffers' Amy Taylor calling her "an inspiration", KNEECAP declaring her "the best support act we've ever had"  and De La Soul calling her "the queen" - 'HANDOUT', 'MOB TIES' and 'BACKSTREETS' follow a mammoth 2025 that saw Miss Kaninna named one of NME's Essential 100 Emerging Artists, nab her second J Award nomination (Live Act of the Year) and score 3x ARIA Award nominations for her sold-out Dawg In Me national tour and her critically acclaimed debut EP KANINNA (2024), also nominated for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Release, winning Best Independent Hip-Hop EP/Album and Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year at the 2025 Australian Independent Music (AIR) Awards and scored a heart-warming shoutout in Ben Lee x Phantom Planet's 'Catch My Disease 2025' and international media acclaim - that continues to build - from the likes of VOGUE, NMEThe GuardianRUSSH, Cosmopolitan, SBS, Rolling StoneKEXP, KCRW, a panel appearance on ABC's Spicks & Specks, full adds to triple j, CADA, iHeartAus and beyond, the KANINNA EP making a slew of end-of-year Best Of lists - seeing its creator boast key DSP playlist support and multiple covers, and in 2026, Amazon named her a Global Artist To Watchappearing on their billboard in Times Square  - with Spotify also showcasing her on their EQUAL billboard in Times Square the same week. With activism a crucial thread in Miss Kaninna's lineage and her art, contributing her platform and support to marginalised communities form a vital part of her practise, she headed the creation of Sovereign Day Out - a festival to uplift First Nations people following a Neo-Nazi white supremacist attack on sacred land, also recently appearing on SBS NITV's The Point to discuss the rise of racism in so-called Australia.

Floating effortlessly between hip-hop, R&B, rock and pop (proving she also has the chops for country via her appearance on ABC's That Blackfella Show), Miss Kaninna's genre-defying approach provides a staunch foundation for a new artist with an urgency for change - performing in prestige venues like London's Camden Assembly and the Sydney Opera House plus festivals like St Jerome's Laneway FestivalThe Great Escape UK, Bluesfest, supporting De La Soul and Amyl & the Sniffers nationally, KNEECAP nationally and across the EU/UK, Thelma Plum, Hiatus Kaiyote, ONEFOUR, M.I.A and more, with her breakout (and cultural breakthrough) debut single 'Blak Britney', nominated for 3 ARIA Awards including Best Independent Release making her the first independent Aboriginal woman ever to be nominated for a debut single (and 3 more nominations to follow for her EP KANINNA) - also named in Rolling Stone's Best 300 AUNZ Songs of the 21st Century So Far and included in Netflix's Heartbreak High as well as her followup 'Pinnacle Bitch'. Following another jam-packed summer festival run including BTV, Wildlands and more, as well as her own headline home and UK tours, an 18-date KNEECAP support locally and internationallylive performances at A Gathering For GazaParty In The Paddock, PBS Drive LiveSPLORE Festival and Sonder Festival, hot on the heels an AIR Award nomination ahead of this year's ceremony for the music video of "vulnerable and tough" (Rolling Stone) standalone single 'BACKSTREETS' in late 2025 - which placed #187 in triple j's Hottest 200 - Miss Kaninna is set to take her ferocious charisma, rage, and resistance on the road once again -  delivering every performance an uncompromising statement of identity and truth. Miss Kaninna continues ongoing work with initiatives supporting Indigenous, immigrant, LGBTQI+ and all women’s rights - with each milestone and movement solidifying her already-won place as a voice and presence who commands full respect and attention.
